Man held for harassing woman with fake profile
MUMBAI: Officers from the BKC cyber police station have arrested a businessman in his early 30s on Saturday for allegedly harassing a woman by creating her bogus profile on Facebook.
The accused had stated in the profile that the woman can arrange for jobs with Jet Airways and also gave away her phone number for people to get in touch with her. The woman started getting numerous phone calls from unknown people after which she approached the police.
Investigations revealed that the accused committed the offence to set a score with her involving a monetary dispute.
According to the police, the complainant is a Chembur resident and works with a private firm. She said in her complaint that she started getting phone calls from people asking her for jobs with Jet Airways in November.
When the complaint asked one of the callers how he got her contact number, she was informed that there was a profile with her name on Facebook saying she arranges for jobs with Jet Airways and it had her phone number.
Deputy commissioner of police (cyber) M Rajkumar said, “Because of the fake profile, the complainant started getting a number of phone calls with jobrelated requests and was harassed. She approached us and lodged a complaint.”
The DCP said that senior inspector Sudhir Mahadik, inspector Ravi Sardesai and subinspector Sadhana Belgaonkar thoroughly went through the profile and after technical analysis of all the details zeroed in on a suspect based out of Ulhasnagar.
“When we questioned the man, he revealed that he was involved in a monetary dispute with the complainant. He created the bogus profile and harassed her by posting her personal contact number to seek revenge,” Rajkumar said.
