MUMBAI: After the spike in day temperatures over the last week, the city woke up to cool winds on Sunday. The minimum temperature in the suburbs was four degrees below normal – the lowest in the new year so far. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a minimum temperature of 13.2 degrees Celsius in Santacruz, while south Mumbai recorded its normal temperature of 20.2 degrees Celsius.

The last two days – January 1 and January 2 – saw minimum temperatures hovering at 15 degrees Celsius in the suburbs.

The maximum temperatures, which had stayed between 32 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius in south Mumbai in the first two days of the new year, also dropped. On Sunday, the maximum temperature at Colaba was normal at 29.8 degrees Celsius, while it was 1.2 degrees above normal at Santacruz, where it was recorded at 33.2 degrees Celsius.

“The slight drop in both maximum and minimum temperatures is because winds are tending to be northerly to north easterly. We are expecting a fur ther fall, although not a very drastic one,” said VK Rajeev director, western region, IMD “The anti-cyclonic circulation stopping cold winds from the north over the central peninsu lar has become weak, hence the dip in the temperatures.”

Humidity levels were high dur ing the day, with Santacruz and Colaba recording 84% and 85% respectively. Humidity, however fell to 40% in Santacruz, and 73% in Colaba, by evening.

Weathermen have pre dicted mainly clear skies on Monday with day and night temperatures at 32 degrees Celsius and 13 degrees Celsius respectively.
