21-year-old arrested for molesting girl

MUMBAI: The Vakola police have arrested a 21-year-old youth under the charge of molestatio­n and trespassin­g after he proposed to a girl at her house when her parents were out. The accused and victim are residents of Santacruz (East) and are neighbours. The police said the accused wanted to propose to the girl for a long time but was waiting for New Year’s Eve.

The police said the accused was waiting outside the victim’s home on December 31 to get a chance to propose to her. As soon as her parents went out he barged into the house and held the girl’s hand and put his arm around her waist.

But, before he could say anything the girl started screaming for help. The accused tried to pacify her saying he had wanted to ask her to marry him. But, the scared girl pushed him out of her house. The incident occurred around 7pm on December 31, said a police officer from Vakola police station The accused escaped because he feared that the neighbours would gather and catch him, the officer said.

When the girl’s parents returned, she narrated the incident. They approached the Vakola police station on January 1 and registered a case against the youth, the officer said.

“Based on the victim’s state ment, we arrested the man on charges of molestatio­n and tres passing. The girl alleged that the accused touched her inappropri ately when he entered the house to propose to her,” said senior inspector Mahadev Wavale of the Vakola police station.
