MUMBAI: After the Bombay high court’s intervention, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun the process of closing the dumping ground at Mulund.

The civic body has issued tenders to initiate the land recovery process.

Earlier in August, the BMC had informed the Bombay high court that it would close down the dumping site at Mulund and also take corrective steps at the Deonar dumping ground.

Though the earlier deadline to close the Mulund and Deonar dumping grounds was November, the high court extended it to January 31, 2016.

The BMC will set up a plant to process the garbage and create by-products to ensure land recovery.

A senior civic official from the solid waste management (SWM) said, “The process will also include leveling the ground — the garbage hill created at Mulund will be reduced to a flat surface. We are almost in the final stages. The bids will be in by January 15.”

Once the recovery process is complete, the BMC hopes to set up a ‘waste to energy’ plant at the same site, the official confirmed.

Initiated in 2013, the BMC is yet to set up the plant, which uses waste to generate electricity.

The city generates close to 9,000 metric tonnes of waste every day, of which Kanjurmarg receives about 2,700 metric tonnes, and Mulund and Deonar receive about 2,000 metric tonnes and 3,500 metric tonnes respectively. The BMC has also said that in the future, the waste generated is likely to reach 10,000 to 11,500 tonnes a day.
