BMM students get sweet surprise in grading

MUMBAI: Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) students were surprised to know that the University of Mumbai has increased their aggregate marks, almost three weeks after the results of their fifth semester examinations were announced.

Many students who had scored A grade in their fifth semester, have now been awarded O (distinction).

The sweet surprise came because of the 5044 (A) Ordinance of the Credit Based Semester and Grading Systems (CBSGS), which allow extra marks to be given to the students so that they get the O grade.

While the ordinance clearly states that no student can get more than 6 marks (3 per subject) under this feature, there were students who secured 12 marks more than their previous aggregate.

“My aggregate score has gone up by 12 marks compared to the result which was declared in January. I had not even applied for re-evaluation in any subject. In fact in a particular subject my previous result showed that I was given grace marks to pass the theory, but now my total for that subject is 81 on 100,” said Anipreet Sawant, a TYBMM student of Mithibai College, Vile Parle.

University officials stated that the upgraded marks are the outcome of additional provisions to general ordinances made available by the university under CBSGS.

“Ordinance 5044 (A) states that a student with A grade who falls short of the O grade by merely three marks or less, should be given the grace marks to push them for better grades. It can only be done with maximum two subjects and this year, this feature has been applied to the BMM students,” said Deepak Wasave, the controller of examination, MU. However, he could not explain why certain students have scored above 6 on their aggregate scores.
