NEW DELHI: Former finance minister P Chidambaram said on Sunday that he was the real target behind the “preposter ous, malicious and totally false” allegations that his son Kart Chidambaram has undisclosed assets. “We know that Karti is being targeted only because he is my son and the real target is me Ultimately, truth will prevail,” he said in a statement.

The senior Congress leader insisted that Karti runs a legiti mate business fully compliant with laws and regulations of the income-tax department. He also offered his son’s “undisclosed assets” to the government for ₹1

Karti Chidambaram is under fire from Tamil Nadu chief min ister Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party for alle gations that he built a business empire from undisclosed money received fraudulently in the Aircel-maxis scam.

“If the government is of the view that Karti has undisclosed assets I would ask the government to make a list of such alleged undis closed assets. Karti will voluntarily execute any document necessary to transfer those assets (allegedly undisclosed) to the government for a nominal consideration of ₹1,” Chidambaram said. “Let the gov ernment become the owner of the alleged undisclosed assets.”

He said Karti’s assets and liabili ties were duly disclosed in his tax returns. “He has no undisclosed asset anywhere. The allegation that he has undisclosed assets are wild and reckless allegations and by implication against me,” Chidambaram said.

Clarifying that Karti runs a legitimate business, apart from managing inherited property Chidambaram said his son has been an income tax assessee for many years and duly and regu larly filed his income tax returns including a statement of assets and liabilities, every year.
