MUMBAI: A 35-year-old man died after the car, which he drove jumped a divider and landed on the opposite lane at Sion early Sunday.

According to police, the man has been identified as Lalit Jain.

“Jain was driving the car accompanied by four of his relatives, all men. They were returning to Mulund after a birthday party at Lower Parel when the accident happened,” said a police officer from Chunabhatti police station.

The accident occurred beneath Ahuja Bridge at Everard Nagar around 2am on the eastern express highway (EHH). “The vehicle deviated from its direction, jumped the divider and landed on the oppo site lane after which it turned turtle. Jain, who was taken to Sion hospital, had sustained grievous injuries and suc cumbed to his injuries while others sustained minor inju ries,” said the officer.

The Mumbai police have cautioned motorists to drive safely owing to wet condi tions on roads during mon soons. According to sources the accident resembled the eastern freeway accident that occurred on Tuesday morning in which an Innova driven by businessman Abdul Hamid Sirwa, 48, jumped the divider landed on the opposite lane and crashed into a taxi and another car. Sirwa, taxi driver Nandlal Jaiswal, 46, and his passenger Vijay Kelkar died in the acci dent.

The police registered a case against Sirwa as they suspected he was speeding and the driver may have lost control over the vehicle. Police suspect there was a slight deviation where the accident took place and the vehicle may have slipped because of accumulation of water. The police may also write to the authorities to increase the number of CCTV cameras on the freeway, especially along the stretch from Wadala Bhakt Park to Panjarpole junction.
