Work on ₹1,300-crore GMLR project likely to begin in October
FOURTH CONNECTOR
MUMBAI: After initial delay over contractors, the work on the Goregaon-mulund Link Road (GMLR) is expected to start by October.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had set a deadline to begin the construction work on the first phase by April end.
For the second phase, the BMC has decided to issue a Rs110-crore tender for road widening of the 150-meter-long AK Vaidya Marg running between Oberoi Mall and Filmcity in Dindoshi, Goregaon.
For this phase of the Rs1,300 crore GMLR project, more than 500 settlements along the AK Vaidya Marg will be rehabilitated. The project will be carried out in three phases, including construction of a bridge at Nahur railway station by demolishing the old one. This will be carried out in the first phase.
The development of the The project, which will be the fourth road to connect west and east, will reduce the travelling time from
Goregaon to Mulund to 15-20 minutes
As part of the project, the BMC will widen the road from Oberoi Mall to Filmcity
It will also widen a 1.5-km
remaining part of the GMLR will be done according to the Development Plan (DP). This excludes a tunnel.
The 6-km tunnel under the Filmcity, Goregaon, will be the last phase of the project. The civic body had last year presented a new design of the GMLR to the political leaders in which it was mentioned that the opening point was supposed to be at AK Vaidya Marg in Dindoshi.
It also mentioned of options of two underground tunnels.
First, a 6-km underground tunnel underneath the Filmcity and another 9-km tunnel under neath Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Khindipada, and ending at LBS Marg, Mulund.
The tunnels escalated the cost of the project by Rs100 crore.
The 14.66-km GMLR will be the fifth one connecting the east ern and the western suburbs. It will help reduce traffic on the Jogeshwari-vikhroli Link Road which faces severe congestion during peak hours.
