India beat Bangladesh, clinch U-18 Asia Cup

DHAKA: Abhishek Yadav’s last minute goal gave India a 5-4 victory against hosts Bangladesh in thye final of the under-18 Asia Cup hockey tournament.

Abhishek scored in the last 20 seconds to win India the title.

India started off the proceeding­s on a good note to earn an early penalty corner. The game dropped into a predictabl­e rhythm after with India holding the possession while Bangladesh waited for the counter. From a counter, Bangladesh won a PC, and M Roman Sarkar scored to give the hosts the lead.

India then equalised as Shivam Anand executed a perfect reverse flick into the net. Later, from a counter, Mohammad Mohsin gave Bangladesh the lead with a timely deflection.

India scored via Hardik Singh’s PC to level the scores, before Dilpreet Singh gave them the lead.

In a topsy-turvy end, Mohammed Ashraful Islam equalised for Bangladesh, Ibungo Singh Konjengbam fired India back in front and Mahabub Hossain got the hosts level again, only for Abhishek to score from a quick counter with seconds left to the hooter. SRIKANTH BACK IN

TOP 10 IN BWF RANKING NEW DELHI: K Srikanth returned to the top 10 in men’s singles after he jumped five places to reach the world No 9 spot in the latest BWF World ranking.

In women’s singles, Saina Nehwal surged three places to reach the World No 5 spot while PV Sindhu improved two places to earn number 8th position.
