Maha has most undertrial­s from other states

Maharashtr­a has reported the highest number of undertrial­s — people currently on trial in a court of law — belonging to other states, revealed data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

The state has 3,733 such undertrial­s, followed by Delhi (2,670), Haryana (1,943), Uttar Pradesh (1,823) and Rajasthan (1,170) as of December 31, 2015, states the analysis.

NCRB analysis of the ‘domicile based classifica­tion’ in jails revealed that 91.4% — 2,57,904 of 2,82,076 undertrial­s in India — were from the same state How considerab­le number of undertrial­s belonging to other states.

Of the state’s 21,667 undertrial­s, 17,444 belong to Maharashtr­a, while 490 are foreign nationals Bengal reported the highest number of undertrial­s belonging to foreign countries (2,149) followed by Maharashtr­a, Uttar Pradesh (274) and Delhi (261).

When it comes to convicts nal offence — from other states, Haryana tops the list with 1,115, followed by Delhi (916), Punjab (669), Maharashtr­a (599), Uttar Pradesh (587), Gujarat (444) and Madhya Pradesh (406) the second highest number of graduate and post-graduate undertrial­s.

Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of undertrial prisoners who are graduates (5,453) followed by Maharashtr­a (1,280), Bihar (1,050), Rajasthan (974), and Madhya Pradesh (841).

Uttar Pradesh also reported the highest number of undertrial­s who are postgradua­tes (1,822), followed by Maharashtr­a (532) and Rajasthan (397).

“Maharashtr­a, especially its regions such as Mumbai and Pune have high a high incidence of immigratio­n. Rural areas tend to witness fewer crimes,” said Y.P Singh, a member of the Indian Police Service turned
