Maha has most undertrials from other states
Maharashtra has reported the highest number of undertrials — people currently on trial in a court of law — belonging to other states, revealed data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The state has 3,733 such undertrials, followed by Delhi (2,670), Haryana (1,943), Uttar Pradesh (1,823) and Rajasthan (1,170) as of December 31, 2015, states the analysis.
NCRB analysis of the ‘domicile based classification’ in jails revealed that 91.4% — 2,57,904 of 2,82,076 undertrials in India — were from the same state How considerable number of undertrials belonging to other states.
Of the state’s 21,667 undertrials, 17,444 belong to Maharashtra, while 490 are foreign nationals Bengal reported the highest number of undertrials belonging to foreign countries (2,149) followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh (274) and Delhi (261).
When it comes to convicts nal offence — from other states, Haryana tops the list with 1,115, followed by Delhi (916), Punjab (669), Maharashtra (599), Uttar Pradesh (587), Gujarat (444) and Madhya Pradesh (406) the second highest number of graduate and post-graduate undertrials.
Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of undertrial prisoners who are graduates (5,453) followed by Maharashtra (1,280), Bihar (1,050), Rajasthan (974), and Madhya Pradesh (841).
Uttar Pradesh also reported the highest number of undertrials who are postgraduates (1,822), followed by Maharashtra (532) and Rajasthan (397).
