Navi Mumbai residents’ support for their civic body chief Tukaram Mundhe has become stronger as he faces a no-confidence motion on Tuesday in the special general body meeting.

Following reports of residents planning to gather at NMMC headquarters in CBD Belapur on Tuesday, the police have clamped IPC section 144 in 100 m area around the headquarters. It bans any gathering in the area.

Assistant commissioner of police Dhanraj Daima said, “Action will be taken against those who gather in the area either to support or oppose the motion. There can be no sloganeering nor canvassing or attempt to influence.”

He said, “Only the corporators, civic officials and personnel and those related to the civic body and the general body meeting will be allowed in the NMMC headquarters.”

Last week, the NCP, Shiv Sena and the Congress proposed a resolution against him. Since then, the residents have been staging rallies and using social networking sites, opposing the no-confidence motion .

“Many politicians attacking the commissioner have been served notices for illegal constructions or other violations. There are others who know that they could be next. For the first time we have an officer who is standing up against corrupt practices by those in power,” said Brijesh Misra, a social worker who organised an event to support Mundhe.

Signature campaigns wereheld at Shivaji Chowk in Vashi on Sunday and Monday. Residents have also started an online signature campaigns.

A retired colonel DP Singh, Belapur, said: “The commissioner is an honest man and we will support him.”
