Watchman arrested for looting house, shop in Sion

The Sion police have arrested a 61-year-old watchman for stealing valuables from housing societies that he was supposed to protect.

The police said that the accused — identified as Gaurishank­ar Sukhdev Chaurasia — had looted several flats in different locations. He would approach residents of high rises pretending that his children had thrown him out of the house and would request for a job as a security guard, said the police.

An officer from Sion police station said, “Chaurasia always used a different name while introducin­g himself and wouldn’t sub reveal his identity. He claimed that the documents were left behind in the house when he was forced out by his children.”

After bagging the job, he would select a flat in the society that appeared as an easy target and wait for an opportunit­y to loot it, said the police. The accused hails from Uttar Pradesh where his Before striking a house, he would call his son Arwind and his friend Raja Singh.

Assistant police inspector Santosh Gaikwad from Sion said, “Chaurasia would wait outside the house, while the two others went to loot it.” He added that the trio had on February 2, broken into a dry fruit shop below the residentia­l building at Sion and walked away with valuables and cash worth Rs 93,000. The incident came to light when the victims filed a complaint and after going through CCTV footage, they realised the guard was the culprit, said police.
