The Pydhonie police arrested two people for gang raping a 27-year-old woman. The incident came to light after the survivor fell from the fifth-floor balcony of her rapist’s apartment while trying to escape. She has been admitted to JJ Hospital and is said to be out of danger.

The accused are Santosh Kanojia , 26, and Faruk Abdul Latif Khan, 31. The police said the woman came to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh last week. “She caught a train from Lucknow on March 7, intending to find a job in Mumbai. She met Kanojia on the train. He told her he could help her get a job,” said an officer from Pydhonie police station.

Kanojia took her to his Bhiwandi residence on March 8. The woman, in her statement to the police, said he raped her repeatedly and later threatened her.

On Thursday evening, Kanojia took the woman to south Mumbai on the pretext of getting her a job. He introduced her to Khan, a hawker who sells cloth.

“Kanojia brought her to South Mumbai at 10 pm. He told her there were no trains running at that late hour and so they could not return. He said they could stay at Khan’s house,” said an officer. They took the woman to a room on the fifth floor of Surangi Mansion in Pydhonie, which is owned by Khan’s supervisor. The two then raped her.

“After the accused fell asleep, the woman tried to open the main door and flee. As one of the men woke up, she went to the terrace and locked the door. As it was dark, she couldn’t see and slipped around 4 am,” added an officer.

“She started yelling for help and we spotted her.we called the Mumbai police control room, The police reached the spot in 15 minutes,” said a neighbour.
