Record for Herath but B’desh on top
Shakib Al Hasan struck his fifth Test century and Mosaddek Hossain scored a fifty on his debut to put Bangladesh in control of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo Friday.
The visitors were all out for 467 runs to establish a 129-run lead in the first innings over their Sri Lankan hosts, who were bowled out for 338 on the previous day at the P Sara Oval.
Sri Lanka reached 54-0 at stumps on the third day with both openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Upul Tharanga unbeaten on 25.
Shakib made 116 and received strong support from Mosaddek (75) and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 52 as Bangladesh put in one of their most impressive batting performances in their 100th Test match.
Sri Lankan skipper Rangana Herath polished up the last three wickets for 13 runs and finished with 4-82. Herath in the process became only the second Sri Lankan after Muttiah Muralitharan to claim 1,000 FC wickets.
DE KOCK, BAVUMA HELP SA REGAIN CONTROL
Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma shared a 160-run partnership on Friday to help South Africa build an 81-run lead over New Zealand on day two of the second Test.
At stumps, South Africa were 349 for nine in reply to New Zea land’s 268 at the Basin Reserve.
De Kock made 91 and Bavuma 89 before tailenders Vern Philan der (36 not out) and Morne Mor kel (31 not out) continued the stubborn resistance with an unbroken 47-run stand for the last wicket.
Three overs before lunch the tourists appeared in serious trouble at six for 94, still 174 runs behind New Zealand, who had taken four wickets in the morn ing session.
But it was another 39 overs before the home side would strike again when Jimmy Neesham took the wicket of a rejuvenated de Kock after tea.
His dismissal ended a sus tained counter-attack which saw the South African pair grow in confidence as the New Zealand seamers struggled with their line and length.
