Four escape with minor injuries as SUV overturns near Haji Ali

Four friends, out on a stroll after dinner, had a narrow escape after the SUV they were travelling in overturned and crashed into a coconut tree near Haji Ali.

The incident took place in the early hours of Monday after the driver, one of the friends, lost control of the vehicle.

The driver was identified as Umang Joshi, 28, a tourist vehicle operator.

He was arrested and booked under Section 337 (causing hurt by act endangerin­g life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. He was released on bail in the afternoon.

Senior inspector Sanjay Surve from Tardeo police station said, “The driver was speeding when he lost control over the SUV. The vehicle turned turtle and crashed into a nearby coconut tree. The speed at which the car was driven, propelled it for 50 metres despite toppling.”

The police said four friends comprise three girls and Joshi, who were immediatel­y rushed to Nair hospital. All four sustained minor injuries.

“The driver received four stitches to his right hand. The three girls were discharged immediatel­y after receiving initial treatment. All four are residents of Kalbadevi and had gone for a post-dinner stroll at Worli Sea face. However, while returning, the driver lost control over the vehicle after speeding and crashed it into a tree outside Lala Lajpat Rai college,” said another officer.
