Local giants Air India won the Elite Division of Mumbai District Football Association League 2017 as they played a 1-1 draw against Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) side at the Cooperage Ground here on Friday.

The first half saw both teams enjoying equal ball possession but they couldn’t build on it as both sides kept on giving the ball away with sloppy passing. Both had a few chances in the opening 45 minutes but neither could convert any into a goal. ONGC had the best chance in the first half as their number 10 and skipper Enock Annan fired a shot from outside the box which was acrobatically saved by Air India’s keeper.

The second half started with a bang for the Air India as they were gifted a penalty inside two minutes of the play. Midfielder Vijith Shetty slotted it to give them the lead. ONGC bounced back just 15 minutes after the goal as they too earned a penalty to level the score, midfielder Nitesh scoring from the spot to make it 1-1.

After the two goals, the sec ond half didn’t see much of the action as both sides were unable to break the deadlock. Air India won the league on the base o superior point tally in the league.
