19-yr-old student crashes hired car into pedestrians, 9 injured

MUMBAI: The Dharavi police have booked a 19-year-old first-year law student for rash and negligent driving which led to causing injury to nine people near Sion. The woman was driving a rental car to Bandra with her friends when the accident took place.

At Sion, when the signal turned red, instead of applying the brakes, the girl, identified as Dhruvi Rajpal Jain, accelerated the vehicle, hitting five pedestrians before crashing into a Bolero, an auto rickshaw and a scooter.

Jain, a resident of Kalbadevi, is a first-year law student with a Mumbai-based college, said police officials. The incident took place near Ambedkar Garden, Y junction, Sion road on Tuesday at around 5:30pm. Jain asked her father if she could drive the car but he refused.

“So Jain, along with her two friends booked a rental car instead. They first drove around the city and then decided to go to Bandra,” said a police officer.

The complainant in the case, Sajida Sameer Khan, 26, a resident of Kherwadi was crossing the road along with her husband Sameer Khan, 28, and their threemonth-old son when they were hit. All the three were injured. Two more pedestrians, Bibi Fatima, 27, and Arshad Sayed, 38, were also injured in the incident.

Nagnath Khune, police sub-inspector, Dharavi police station, confirmed that the car has been seized and a case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
