Double delight for Om Prakash, Vijay Kumar in KSS Shooting
NEW DELHI: Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Om Prakash Mitharwal edged 2010 CWG gold medallist Omkar Singh by just one point to clinch the gold medal in the 50m free pistol category at the 18th KSS Memorial Shooting Championship here on Wednesday.
His second gold came in the 50M Free Pistol team event when he, along with Gurpal Singh and Jain Singh, topped the charts with 1654 points.
London Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar also displayed his class as he bagged two gold medals for Haryana in the 25m center fire pistol individual and team event respectively.
In the 50m pistol junior category, Haryana’s Anmol Jain scored 552 to bag the gold. The 10m air pistol women roster saw Abhidnya Patil of Maharashtra take the gold with 240.5. The former World No.1 Heena Sidhu won a silver.
SHIVA, SARITA MAKE IT TO QUARTERFINALS
ULAANBAATAR : Star boxers Shiva Thapa (60kg), Vikas Kishan (75kg) and L Sarita Devi (60kg) were among the prominent names as eight Indians entered the quarterfinals of the Ulaanbaatar Cup here on Wednesday.
Ashish (64kg), Mandeep Jangra (69kg), Salman Sheikh (52kg) and Etash Khan (56kg) joined Shiva and Vikas in the quarters after clinching contrasting wins.
In the women’s draw, national champion Sarjubala Devi (51kg) and veteran Sarita Devi made the last-eight stage.
AFI TARGETS 1000 IAAF COACHES IN 5 YEARS
NEWDELHI: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) plans to have 1,000 IAAF license-holding coaches on its roster in the next five years in what it calls a “highimpact” initiative that will change the face of the sport at the grassroots level.
The AFI began work on this project with nine Level 1 courses at five cities last month. Each course has a maximum of 24 participants and four such Level 1 courses -- in Chennai, Ranchi, Gwalior and Patiala -- have already been completed.
MAVERICKS BEAT SMASHERS IN UTT
NEWDELHI: Manika Batra’s heroics went in vain as RP-SG Mavericks outplayed table toppers Dabang Smasher TTC in Ultimate Table Tennis at the Tyagaraj Stadium here on Wednesday. The win now sees Mavericks end the night on 37 points, just two adrift of the table toppers Smashers.
