MUMBAI: An elderly couple were robbed and murdered in their three-bedroom apartment in Bandra, on Thursday. The police suspect a domestic help killed them.

The couple have been identified as 85-year-old Nanak Gopaldas Makhijani and his 71-yearold wife Daya Nanak Makhijani.

They lived in their Khar apartment with a live-in maid. The couple are survived by two sons, both of whom live abroad and who have been informed of this tragic incident. On Thursday morning, at 9am, a part-time help who worked at the Makhijanis rang their doorbell but there was no answer. She informed the watchman, who tried contacting the flat using the intercom. The watchman also called Nanak’s mobile and got no response.

At this point, the watchman contacted the building’s chairman who instructed the housekeeping staff to find a way into the flat.

The staff used a ladder to reach the first-floor flat and found the couple’s bodies in their bedroom. The police were immediately informed.

The police said preliminary investigations suggest the couple were strangled to death in their sleep, possibly using a dupatta.
