MUMBAI: The south-bound stretch of Parel flyover on Babasaheb Ambedkar Road remained closed for all vehicles on Thursday after a water pipe burst at the foot of the flyover and flooded the entire area. The BMC’S hydraulics department continued to work overnight to repair the pipeline, and restore water supply and traffic.

Ashok Tawadia of the hydraulics department said, “Officials were figuring out the extent of damage on Thursday. The pipeline will be fixed by 4 am on Friday.” This pipeline supplies water to F-south ward (Parel, Elphinstone and Dadar) between 4 am and 7 am, and F-north ward (Dadar, Wadala and Matunga) between 7 am and 10 am.

On Thursday, water supply was not affected as the leakage was discovered around 6.30 am. The BMC kept the line open till water supply timings were up, and then began to excavate to get to the pipeline.

An official said, “On-field staff will check the nature of the damage. If the pipeline is punctured, it will take the entire night to repair it.”

On Thursday, motorists were asked to take a left turn towards Wadala cross road from Arora junction in Matunga. Diversions were in place Naigaon cross road as well, the traffic police said.

Neither civic nor traffic officials are not sure when the flyover will be reopened. “The BMC has not given us an estimate on when work will be completed,” said a traffic official. The cause of the leakage has not been determined.
