MUMBAI: Observing that women suffer more in rail-related accidents than men, the Bombay HC said the Railways should consider allotting a separate first class coach for women commuters in all suburban trains. Presently, one-fourth of three coaches are reserved for women who have first class tickets or season passes. Three-fourth of three coaches are earmarked as second class women’s compartmen­ts. “Why can’t the Railways allot a full coach for ladies travelling in first class,” a division bench of Justices NH Patil and GS Kulkarni said.

Tanzanian national with 16.2kg narcotics held

MUMBAI: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) arrested a Tanzanian national for carrying narcotics substance (amphetamin­es) weighing about 16.2kg at the Chhatrapat­i Shivaji Internatio­nal Airport. The CISF randomly checked the bag of Julias Francis Chihongaki on profiling basis on Thursday around 1.20am and found the narcotics.

Little rain on Thursday, few spells expected on Friday

MUMBAI : For the second consecutiv­e day, the city recorded cloudy conditions but hardly any rainfall. Between 8.30am and 8.30pm on Thursday, Colaba recorded 0.4mm and Santacruz recorded 0.6mm. The weather bureau predicted a few spells of rain for Friday but said rainfall activity was expected to increase over the weekend.

Man sexually assaults 3yearold in Mulund, held

MUMBAI: A three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a 22-year-old labourer at a constructi­on site in Mulund. According to Navghar police, the girl is a labourer’s daughter. The incident occurred when her parents were out of their makeshift room. The accused then entered the room and sexually assaulted her.

Student dies after falling into Dombivli drain

DOMBIVLI: The body of a 24-year old student, Harshad Jimkal, who fell into a storm water drain in Dombivli on Tuesday, was recovered on Thursday morning around 8 am. Police said, on July 10, Harshad walked towards the drain to attend nature’s call and fell into it. Fire officials were called but failed to save him.

Woman says cops beat her, cops say she abused them

THANE: A 30-year-old woman from Rabodi has alleged that she was beaten up by a traffic police inspector and a constable for riding her two-wheeler on the wrong side. However, senior police inspector from Kalwa police station – S Bagde – has denied the allegation and said the woman has been booked for abusing cops.

Dahanu: Four buffaloes mowed by train

PALGHAR: Traffic was hit for around 30 minutes on Mumbaiboun­d services after four buffaloes were run over by the 590436 Up Valsad- Bandra passenger train between Dahanu and Vangaon on Thursday evening.
