Hima scripts history, clinches gold

TAMPERE (FINLAND): Hima Das on Thursday scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championsh­ips as she clinched to top spot in the women’s 400m final race on the third day of competitio­ns here.

The 18-year-old Das clocked 51.46s to win the gold. She now joins the illustriou­s company of star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won a gold in Poland in the last edition in 2016 in a world record effort. In fact, Das is the first Indian track athlete to have won a medal in the history of this competitio­n.

MANU, ANISH CONTINUE GOLDEN RUN

NEWDELHI: Pistol shooters Manu Bhaker and Anish Bhanwala continued their golden run with gold medals at the Junior Women’s 10m Air Pistol and Junior Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol respective­ly, at the Meeting of the Shooting Hopes in Pilsen, Czech Republic.manu led throughout in the eight-woman final win with a score of 238.7. Bhanwala shot 33 out of 40 to clinch gold with a resounding five hits out of five finish.

SINDHU ENTERS THAI OPEN QUARTER-FINALS

BANGKOK: Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu advanced into the quarter-finals of the USD 350,000 Thailand Open World Super 500 tournament here on Thursday.

Sindhu recorded a 21-16 21-14 win over Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin. However, P Kashyap lost to Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama 18-21 21-18 19-21 while H S Prannoy lost to Sony Kuncoro 18-21 14-21.

BOXER DROWNS IN CANAL, BODY FOUND

MUZAFFARNA­GAR : The body of 21-year-old national-level boxer Abhishek Sharma, who had drowned in the Ganga canal in Muzaffarna­gar district on Sunday, has been recovered, police said on Thursday.

Sharma had come to Khatoli town from Muzaffarna­gar to bath but drowned in the canal.

GOA SIGNS DEFENDER NIRMAL CHHETRI

MARGAO: FC Goa have announced the signing of Sikkimese defender Nirmal Chhetri for the upcoming season.
