Pipeline burst hits water supply in Parel, Dadar and Matunga
THE BMC SAID THE ENTIRE PIPELINE, WHICH IS 50 YEARS OLD, WAS DAMAGED AND IN A DILAPIDATED CONDITION
MUMBAI: Thursday’s water pipeline burst at the foot of the Parel flyover affected supply in Parel, Elphinstone, Dadar, Wadala and Matunga as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC’S) repair work was finished only by Friday afternoon.
While the civic body said that water supply will be restored to these areas on Saturday, southbound traffic on Parel flyover will remain suspended at least for one more day, as BMC undertakes reconstruction of the dug-up road. Ashok Tawadia, from BMC'S hydraulics department, said, “The entire pipeline was damaged. It is at least 50 years old and was dilapidated. We replaced the pipeline by 12.30pm on Friday. Work on resurfacing the dug up portion of the road is likely to take one more day.”
The cause of the damage to the pipeline is not yet known, and BMC has estimated the pipeline’s age deteriorated its durability.
This pipeline supplies water to the F south ward area — in Parel, Elphinstone, and Dadar — between 4 am and 7 am every morning, and supplies water to the F north ward area — Dadar, Wadala, and Matunga — between 7 am and 10 am.
Since Thursday, motorists heading to south Mumbai from Dadar are being diverted to the road under the flyover, causing traffic jams at the at the intersection of Jagannath Bhatankar road and Babasaheb Ambedkar Road.
