were allotted their first preference, of which 27,692 confirmed the seats. More than 7,000 students failed to do so, which means they will now have to wait for all rounds to get over. They will be allotted seats on a firstcome-first-served basis, depending on the eligibility.
The second round will begin on July 16. Friday was the last day to change college preferences for this round.
According to the data released by the state education department, St Xavier’s college in Dhobi Talao has only eight seats remaining for arts in the general category and 48 seats for science. Matunga’s RA Podar College has only 10 seats vacant for commerce in the general category this year. Shobhana Vasudevan, principal, RA Podar College, said “We have got quite a few seat
confirmations in the first round. There seem to be very few seats for the second round.”
Ashok Wadia, principal, Jai Hind college, Churchgate, which has only thirty-five seats left in the arts stream, said the competition
will be very tough in the second round of admissions. “Most top scorers who were allotted prominent colleges have confirmed their seats. This would mean only a marginal dip in the cut-offs in the second
round,” said Wadia.
Meanwhile, more than 2.1 lakh students registered for admissions in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) this year, of which more than 50,000 confirmed their seats.
