PLEA IN SC AGAINST BID TO WITHDRAW RIOTS CASES

NEW DELHI : A plea was moved in the Supreme Court against the alleged attempt of the Uttar Pradesh government to withdraw around 131 cases related to the 2013 Muzaffarna­gar riots including those involving serious offences like attempt to murder. The plea filed by Shamli resident Imran alleged that the cases sought to be withdrawn include those in which UP minister Suresh Rana, former Union minister Sanjiv Balyan, MP Bhartendu Singh, MLA Umesh Malik and ruling party leader Sadhvi Prachi are accused. The plea also sought directions to transfer the pending cases to any appropriat­e place outside Uttar Pradesh.

Unknown MEA officials booked for accounts fraud

NEW DELHI: The CBI has booked unknown officials of the ministry of external affairs (MEA) in case of suspected irregular withdrawal of Rs 92 lakh from its General Provident Fund (GPF) accounts between August 2017 and February 2018. The ministry said in a complaint to the CBI that during an internal review, it was revealed that COMPACT Data Base (accounting software) was tampered with and certain data fields were altered to facilitate the fraudulent withdrawal.

Second priest arrested in Kerala sexual assault case

THIRUVANAN­THAPURAM: Kerala police on Friday arrested another priest in a sexual exploitati­on case that has rocked the Orthodox Syrian church over the past few weeks. Police said Father Johnson V Mathew was arrested from Thiruvalla in Pathanamth­itta and brought to the crime branch office for questionin­g. Another accused in the case, Father Job Mathew, surrendere­d before the investigat­ing team on Thursday. Police are hunting for two more priests booked in the case.
