DALY PULLS OUT FROM THE OPEN DUE TO KNEE INJURY

CARNOUSTIE, SCOTLAND : Two-times major champion John Daly has pulled out of the Open Championsh­ip starting on Thursday at Carnoustie in Scotland due to a knee injury, organisers said on Sunday. The 52-year-old Daly, who won the event in 1995, will be replaced by fellow American Keegan Bradley at the 147th Open Championsh­ip.

“Sorry...really tried these last 2 days to compete & walk, my rt knee osteoarthr­itis is unbearable,” Daly, who won his first golf major at the PGA Championsh­ip in 1991, wrote on his verified twitter handle.

“It would have been nice to have gotten a cart but unfortunat­ely was turned down by our tour board. I couldn’t even hit balls this am!”

KIM SURGES FIVE CLEAR AT JOHN DEERE CLASSIC

LOS ANGELES: American Michael Kim sparked into life late on his back nine to build a five-stroke lead after the third round of a marathon day at the John Deere Classic on Saturday.

Celebratin­g his 25th birthday, Kim finished his third round with four straight birdies to sign for a seven-under-par 64 that put him on an imposing 22-under for the tournament.

Kim endured a long day at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, arriving at the course early to finish his second round before taking a nap during a two-and-a-half hour weather delay, then returning to the course to add three birdies and a bogey.

KOREAS TO FORM JOINT TABLE TENNIS TEAM

SEOUL: The two Koreas will form joint table tennis teams for the 2018 Korea Open next week, a report said Sunday, the latest sign of thawing ties between the neighbours.

The two countries will field joint teams in the men’s and women’s doubles as well as the mixed doubles in the tournament to be held in the South’s city of Daejeon from Tuesday to Sunday, Yonhap news agency said. It cited an unnamed official at the Korea Table Tennis Associatio­n.
