Woman, 48, killed in hit-and-run on EEH

MUMBAI: In a hit-and-run case on Saturday night, a dumper knocked down a two-wheeler on the eastern express highway (EEH) near Chembur, killing a woman who was seated pillion.

According to Tilak Nagar police, the accident occurred on the northbound stretch of the EEH at around 8pm near Amar Mahal junction. The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Shalaka Satam and the person driving the bike was her 55-yearold husband, Shamrao Satam, who sustained minor injuries. The Satams are residents of Janata colony at Pant Nagar in Ghatkopar (East).

Police investigat­ion revealed that it was a dumper which knocked down the two-wheeler and escaped the spot. “The couple had gone to purchase a gift for celebratin­g Shamrao’s brother’s birthday. They were returning to their residence when the accident occurred,” said Sushil Kamble, senior police inspector, Tilak Nagar police station. “We have seized the dumper and have identified the driver.”

A case has been registered against the accused under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and sections and 134 A and B (escaping from the spot without rendering help to the victim) of the Motor Vehicle Act.

This is the second such accident caused by a dumper in recent times. On July 2, a 4-yearold boy was killed at Shivaji Nagar after he was mowed down by a BMC garbage truck.
