CHANDIMAL BANNED FOR 2 TESTS, 4 ODIS

COLOMBO: The Internatio­nal Cricket Council on Monday banned Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal and two top officials for two Tests and four one-day internatio­nals for breaching the spirit of the game. Coach Chandika Hathurusin­gha, manager Asanka Gurusinha and Chandimal refused to take to the field for two hours during the second Test against the West Indies last month after the skipper was accused of ball-tampering. Hathurusin­gha, Gurusinha and Chandimal pleaded guilty to violating the spirit of the game and the chairman of the ICC Code of Conduct Commission decided on the new sanctions on July 11. The trio were also given six penalty points each.

Powar named Indian women’s interim coach

MUMBAI: Former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed the interim coach of the national women’s cricket team until the BCCI finds a suitable replacemen­t for Tushar Arothe. Arothe was forced to resign in the wake of difference­s with senior players who were not happy with the coaching methods of former Baroda all-rounder. Powar will oversee the women’s team camp which begins in Bengaluru from July 25. The BCCI has already invited applicatio­ns for the full-time coach’s job with July 20 being the deadline to apply. “I am happy with the responsibi­lity given and I will try my best to take them (women’s team) ahead,” Powar told PTI.

Fakhar hits ton as Pak beat Zimbabwe in second ODI

BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE: Fakhar Zaman scored an unbeaten century as Pakistan defeated Zimbabwe by nine wickets in the second one-day internatio­nal on Monday. Zimbabwe opted to bat first and were bowled out by Pakistan for 194. Usman Khan wrecked Zimbabwe with four wickets while Hasan Ali took three. Zaman remained unbeaten on 117 as Pakistan reached home in 36 overs.
