Pugilists bag seven gold medals in Serbian youth tournament

NEWDELHI:INDIAN boxers ruled the ring at the 36th Golden Glove of Vojvodina youth tournament, ending with seven gold medals to claim the overall top spot in the event in Subotica, Serbia.

Four men and three women finished with gold medals at the tournament, which featured 17 countries. India claimed the number one position with 17 medals, including six silver and four bronze. The gold medal winners for India were Aman (+91kg), Akash Kumar (56kg), S Barun Singh (49kg), Vijaydeep (69kg), Nitu (48kg), Divya Pawar (54kg), and Lalita (69kg).

WUSHU COLTS CLAIM NINE MEDALS IN BRAZIL

NEW DELHI: The Indian team bagged nine medals including four silver and five bronze in the 7th World Junior Wushu championsh­ips held in Brasilia, Brazil.

In the Sanshou discipline, Babulu (42 kg, subjunior), Saleem (56 kg, subjunior), Savita (48 kg, junior) and Rohit (80kg, junior) won the silver medal, while Himanshu (56 kg, junior), Shruti (60kg, junior), Janhvi (52 kg, junior) claimed bronze medals, according to an Indian Olympic Associatio­n (IOA) official.

In the Taolu discipline, Karanjit Taijiquan and Karanjit Taijijian won two bronze medals.

MEN’S HOCKEY TEAM TO OPEN AGAINST HK CHINA

NEWDELHI:INDIA will open its title defence against minnows Hong Kong China on August 22 in the men’s hockey competitio­n of the Asian Games in Indonesia.

After Hong Kong China, the Indians, drafted in Pool A, will play Japan on August 24 followed by matches against Korea (August 26) and Sri Lanka (August 28).

The Indian women’s team, meanwhile, has been placed in Pool B alongside title holders Korea, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Indonesia.

The Indian women’s team will open its campaign against hosts Indonesia on August 19, followed by games against Kazakhstan (August 21), Korea (August 25) and Thailand (August 27).

FOUR YOUNGSTERS ON CONSTANTIN­E’S RADAR

NEWDELHI: National football team coach Stephen Constantin­e has called up four U-17 World Cup players for the SAFF Championsh­ip preparator­y camp.

These four U-19 players represente­d India in the FIFA U-17 World Cup last year. Prabhsukha­n Singh Gill, Suresh Singh Wangjam, Rahim Ali and Rahul KP will be reporting to the Camp in Delhi from July 28 onwards, along with 30 others.

‘A’ TEAM STICK CHECKS SOUTH KOREA 2-2

BENGALURU: The Indian men’s A team rallied twice to hold South Korea to a 2-2 draw in the fifth and final practice hockey match played at the Sports Authority of India on Monday.
