DEHRADUN: Sub-inspector Gagandeep Singh of Uttarakhan­d police who save a Muslim youth from an angry mob on May 22 at a Nainital temple, would be awarded by chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Independen­ce Day. Singh is among 40 policemen who would be awarded for their commendabl­e and outstandin­g service at the event. Singh would be awarded with ‘Sarahniya Seva Samman Chinha’. The S-I had saved the youth who was allegedly found with a Hindu girl at a temple in Ramnagar town of Nainital.

Maldives seeks withdrawal of Indian helicopter­s

NEW DELHI: The Maldives wants India to withdraw military helicopter­s and personnel posted there following the expiry of an agreement in June, its envoy said, in the latest snub to New Delhi by the Abdulla Yameen government. India and China are head-to-head in the Maldives, the Indian Ocean island chain, where Beijing is building roads, bridges and a bigger airport, upstaging India which has been the country’s prime provider of military and civilian aid for decades.
