Woods slips to five shots behind leader Schauffele

PHILADELPH­IA,US: Tiger Woods did not have things going his way at the BMW Championsh­ip a day after he opened with a 62, which was his lowest score since his last win more than five years ago. Woods endured eight holes before his first birdie and didn’t have many after that. He finished with two straight bogeys for a 70, leaving him five shots behind in a tie for 12th.

However, Xander Schauffele had another great day as he came close to holing a wedge on his second hole, had a 40-foot birdie putt in the middle of his round and finished with a 6-under for the lowest 36-hole score of his career. He also held a two-shot lead over Justin Rose.

Schauffele was at 13-under 127 and will be paired in the third round Saturday with a familiar figure in Philadelph­ia. Rose, who played bogey-free for a 64, won the AT&T National at Aronimmade ink in 2010, and his only major came at nearby Merion in the 2013 US Open.

LOPES BANNED FOR LIFE IN ABUSE CASE

LOS ANGELES: Two-time Olympic taekwondo champion Steven Lopez has been handed a life ban by the US Center for Safesport following an allegation of sexual misconduct, it was confirmed on Friday. Lopez has been deemed “permanentl­y ineligible” from future competitio­n in a ruling by the center following a four-month investigat­ion. The 39-year-old, a gold medalist at both the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, had been suspended since May. Lopez could yet appeal his suspension, the center said on its website.

LORENZO ON POLE FOR SAN MARINO GP

MISANOADRI­ATICO,ITALY: Jorge Lorenzo broke his own track record to take pole position in the San Marino Grand Prix on Saturday.

Lorenzo, a Spanish rider with Ducati, clocked 1 minute, 31.629 seconds around the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for a 0.287-second advantage over Jack Miller, the Australian who was a surprising second.

Maverick Vinales rounded out the front row while Motogp championsh­ip leader Marc Marquez crashed with just minutes left in Q2. Valentino Rossi, who is a distant second in the standings behind Marquez, placed a disappoint­ing seventh.
