Man gets onto rooftop of train, suffers burns
THE VICTIM SUFFERED 50% BURNS. HE WAS FOUND ON THE ROOF OF THE TRAIN AND RUSHED TO ST GEORGE HOSPITAL
MUMBAI:A 31-year-old labourer, who climbed on the roof of a stationary local train at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Tuesday night, suffered burns as he accidentally touched the overhead wire.
According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the man — identified as Shantanu Mishra, a resident of Navi Mumbai — was on his way home after work at night when he climbed on the train’s roof at CSMT.
Police said they suspected he was pulling off a stunt but were yet to view CCTV footage to confirm the sequence of events. Hemant Bawdhankar, senior inspector of CSMT GRP said his unit received a call at 11pm about the electrocution. On reaching the spot, they found Mishra on the train’s roof and rushed him to St George hospital. “Doctors told us that he has suffered 50% burns,” said Bawdhankar. “After he’s discharged we will book him for travelling on the rooftop.”
“I was sitting inside the train when I heard the chaos. I went outside and saw the man getting burnt,” said Nagmani Pandey, an eyewitness. “He was stuck to the overhead wires for more than 25 minutes.”
GRP officers said 11 people were electrocuted to death on train rooftops in Mumbai till August this year, as compared to 28 during the same period in 2017.
