KALYAN: A woman traffic police constable from Kalyan was slapped and dragged up to 50 metres by an autorickshaw driver after she asked him for his licence on Wednesday.

The accused, Nagesh Babu Awalgiri, 20, has been arrested and a case has also been lodged against the auto’s two passengers who allegedly provoked Awalgiri to assault the constable. Police said the accused did not have a driving license or an autorickshaw permit. He was produced in court and remanded in police custody for two days. On Tuesday, Asha Gawande, 24, was patrolling near Kalyan railway station when she saw a rickshaw parked in the middle of the road.

“I asked Awalgiri to park his rickshaw at the side as it was creating traffic. Awalgiri, who had two passengers at the back, said he would not move till the third one arrived,” she said

“I requested him again, after which he argued and abused me. I asked for his license and he started his rickshaw. I held on to a pole of the rickshaw, but as he drove ahead I fell to the ground and was dragged along.”

Gawande, who suffered injuries to her hands and knee, was taken to nearby hospital. After her statement was recorded, a case was lodged against Awalgiri and the two passengers.

A police officer from Mahatma Phule police station said,” We have arrested Awalgiri and are searching for the two passengers.
