Rampant India enter Johor Cup semis

JOHORBAHRU,MALAYSIA:THE Indian junior men’s hockey team recorded its fourth successive victory at the Sultan of Johor Cup with a 5-4 win over defending champions Australia, assuring a semi-final spot. The win has also helped India top the pool.

Gursahibji­t Singh scored a fine field goal to give India 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. The team scored three more back-to-back goals in the 11th, 14th and 15th minute through Haspreet Singh, Mandeep Mor and Vishnukant Singh respective­ly.

India faltered in their defence in the second quarter only to give away an easy goal through a penalty stroke in the 18th minute. Damon Steffens scored two goals, narrowing the goal deficit to 4-2. Though Shilanand Lakra scored in the 43rd minute to take India’s lead to 5-3, Australia put India through some tense moments as they appeared to make a late recovery.

GERAINT’S TOUR DE FRANCE PRIZE STOLEN

LONDON:GERAINT Thomas’s Tour de France trophy has been stolen after being displayed at a cycle show, Team Sky said.

Sky have been displaying all three Grand Tour trophies — which were won by Thomas and fellow Chris Froome between September last year and July 2018 — at various events.

The trophies had been loaned to their bike supplier Pinarello for the Cycle Show, which was held in Birmingham over the last weekend in September. “It is incredibly unfortunat­e that this has happened,” said Thomas.

U MUMBA TRUMP PINK PANTHERS 39-32

CHENNAI: U Mumba made a strong comeback to beat Jaipur Pink Panthers 39-32 in the Vivo Pro Kabaddi Season VI here on Wednesday. Siddharth Desai scored 13 raid points for U Mumba and was their star per- former. He was ably supported by Rohit Baliyan who chipped in with seven raid points. It was a disappoint­ing first game for Jaipur Pink Panthers as they squandered a healthy first half advantage.

HARVINDER EXTENDS INDIA’S GOLD TALLY

JAKARTA:ARCHER Harvinder Singh extended India’s gold tally to seven as he finished first in the Men’s Individual Recurve Open - W2/ST event at the Para Asian Games here on Wednesday.

In the finals, Harvinder, 27, outclassed China’s Zhao Lixue 6-0 to stand first at the podium. The W2 category of impairment covers athletes with paraplegia, diplegia or double leg amputation below the knee, requiring wheelchair.

Meanwhile, Monu Ghangas bagged silver in the men’s discus throw F11 category, while Mohammed Yasser settled for bronze in the men’s shot put F46 category. Also, Kanickai Irudayaraj won silver in the individual standard P1 Chess event while Bhavinaben Patel won silver in table tennis and Sudhir won bronze in the men’s 80kg powerlifti­ng. India has seven gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze medals.

DONGRE IN FIDE ETHICS COMMITTEE

MUMBAI: Maharashtr­a’s All India Chess Federation (AICF) official Ravindra Dongre was on Wednesday elected to be part of the five-member ethics committee of FIDE, announced the world chess federation, at its general assembly which met recently during the Chess Olympiad at Batumi, in Georgia.
