Plea filed to change 60:40 rule in law courses

MUMBAI: A petition challenging the decision of the University of Mumbai (MU) to introduce the 60:40 system of marking for the three year Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) and five-year Bachelor of Legal Science (BLS) courses without prior intimation to the students for the academic year 2018-19, has been filed in the Bombay high court (HC).

The petition has further sought directions to colleges to implement the orders of the university to extend the date of implementation of the marking systems which law colleges are not following.

The matter is posted for hearing on October 19.

According to the petitioner, the university had introduced the new marking system for the law stream in August, 2018 after admissions for the all semesters, except the first and second semesters in both the three and five-year courses had completed.

As a result of this, students taking admissions in the first year of both these courses felt discriminated, as students of previous years, were not affected by the new marking system.

The petition was mentioned before the bench of justices B R Gavai and M S Karnik on Thursday.

The bench has allowed the petition to be heard after a week.

Advocates Sachin Pawar and Abhishek Bhat, appearing for the petitioner further pointed out that due to the delay in the admission process and following representations by various students bodies, the university had issued a circular to colleges to delay the implementation of the new marking system.

However, none of the colleges had taken cognisance of the same and were harassing students to submit their projects for the 40 marks.
