Nirav’s Alibaug bungalow to be razed, state tells HC

MUMBAI: The state informed the Bombay high court (HC) that the demolition of fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi’s illegally constructe­d bungalow at Alibaug has been ordered and that demolition notices have also been issued to owners of 58 more illegal constructi­ons along Alibaug beach. If the owners take no action, these will be demolished in the next four days.

The high court was hearing petitions alleging damage to the environmen­t due to illegal constructi­ons in the coastal regulation zone (CRZ) at Alibaug.

Advocate PB Kakade, appearing for the state, told the court that as per an HC directive, a civil judge in Alibaug had ordered on December 4 that Nirav Modi’s illegally-constructe­d bungalow in Alibaug be razed.

A demolition notice has been issued for the same and will be carried out soon.

The December 4 order also granted stays against demolition to 61 owners. Kakade said the state was in the process of vacating these stays. The state’s affidavit further stated that 58 illegal structures were owned by the local coastal community. The bench was also informed that the National Green Tribunal had refused to interfere in the matter as it was being heard by the HC.

The court was hearing a petition by activist Surendra Dhavale in which he alleged there were been issued to owners of 58 more illegal constructi­ons along the Alibaug beach. If the owners take no action, these will be demolished in the next four days. numerous illegal structures along a stretch in Alibaug and despite a court order from November 29 to demolish these illegal structures, nothing had been done so far. The state said the collector would initiate demolition work within four days if the owners did not act on the demolition notices. The matter has been posted for further compliance of directions on December 20.
