- Faisal Tandel Mohammed Irani Aziz Hafiz

MUMBAI: Two men were arrested on Tuesday after their motorcycle skid near KEM Hospital in Parel when they were trying to flee the scene after allegedly snatching the gold chain of a 60-year-old woman.

The Bhoiwada police said the accused have a history of committing such crimes and were released on bail three months ago after spending 18 months in jail for involvement in chain snatching cases. They had been booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) by Thane police for their involvement in these cases.

The accused were identified as Mohammed Afsar Sayed Irani, 26, and Aziz Hafiz Sayed Irani, 38. Mohammed Afsar and Aziz Hafiz snatched the chain of Reshma Sakpal but could not escape after their bike skid near the back gate of KEM hospital, police said. Sakpal had raised an alarm after her chain was snatched. She was helped by bystanders, who also caught hold of the two accused and handed them over to the police.

The police registered a case under section of 392 (punishment for robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. “We found that both have a history of committing such crimes and they came to Mumbai especially for the snatching. They were produced in court and remanded to police custody for five days. We are checking their background and how many cases they are involved in,” said Arshad Makandar, police sub-inspector, Bhoiwada police station.
