‘Hand over exams of first, second yr back to colleges’
If individual colleges get the responsibility of first- and second-year exams, they can conduct them in time and teachers, too, can finish assessment early to focus on third year. T SHIWARE, president, Association of Non-government Colleges
MUMBAI: A week after University of Mumbai (MU) barred three professors from examination duty for submitting identical question papers from last year to first year Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) students, college officials have once again started demanding first and second-year examinations to be handed back to individual colleges.
At present, first and secondyear examinations are conducted according to the university schedule and the question paper, too, is set by the examination department of the university. The assessment, however, is conducted in individual colleges.
“The University would benefit by handing over exam responsibility of first and second-year students back to individual colleges. That way, colleges can hold examinations in time and teachers, too, can finish assessment in time to focus on third-year examinations,” said T Shiware, president of the Association of Nongovernment Colleges.
Shiware added that the association will be writing to members of the university’s Academic Council (AC) and the Management Council (MC), for the same.
“The university has made it clear that the exam will not be held again but several students are feeling cheated because those who had checked last year’s question paper had a clear advantage,” said the BMS coordinator of a suburban college.
“All opinions of colleges will be discussed in the next council meeting. We are sure that our action against the three faulting teachers will send a clear message to other teachers so that such situations are not repeated in the future,” said an official from Department of Examination and Evaluation, MU.
Last week, during first year BMS exams, students complained of the question paper for the subject, Introduction to Financial Accounts, being identical to last year’s paper.
An inquiry was set in and a meeting was conducted on Saturday it was decided to debar three teachers involved in setting the question paper from examination duty.
