ELGAR PARISHAD TO BE HELD IN PUNE AGAIN ON JAN 12

PUNE: Even as last year’s Elgar Parishad held at Shaniwarwa­da on December 31 has been at the centre of controvers­y over alleged Maoist links, the organisers — PB Sawant, former Supreme Court judge and BG Kolse-patil, former Bombay High Court judge — have planned another Parishad on January 12, 2019, days after January 1 when the 201st anniversar­y of the historic Battle of Koregaon will be celebrated. “This year, the conference will be organised on the theme ‘Save the Constituti­on’,” said Sawant, adding that it may not be held on the large scale as last year and the venue and other details for the conference are being worked out. “We have sought permission to hold the event at Shaniwarwa­da. If the police and Pune municipal corporatio­n (PMC) refuse to grant us permission, we will hold the event elsewhere,” said Kolse-patil.

Singer Mika Singh detained in Dubai

NEW DELHI: Singer Mika Singh was detained in Dubai Thursday morning, official sources said. The reason for his detention was not immediatel­y known. He was detained at 3 AM, the sources said, adding that legal proceeding­s were being initiated against him.

Soldier killed in Pak firing across Line of Control

SRINAGAR: An Army soldier was killed when Pakistani army opened fire across the Line of Control (LOC) in north Kashmir on Thursday, officials said. Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said Indian and Pakistani armies exchanged fire in Uri (Baramulla district) and Machil (Kupwara district) sectors. “Ceasefire violation by Pakistan in Machil sector of Kupwara district at around 1045 hours today. Own troops retaliated strongly. One soldier martyred in enemy fire,” Colonel Kalia said.

Sandesara family extraditio­n to be sought by ED

NEW DELHI : The Enforcemen­t Directorat­e (ED) has decided to seek Interpol arrest warrants and make extraditio­n requests against the Sandesara family, promoters of a Gujarat-based pharmaceut­ical firm accused in a ~8,000 crore bank fraud case, the agency said on Thursday.the ED added it has obtained a confirmati­on, from the adjudicati­ng authority of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), on its attachment of ~4,710 crore worth of assets in this case.the central probe agency had attached various movable and immovable assets of the group and its directors Nitin Sandesara, Chetan Sandesara, Dipti Sandesara and others in May this year under PMLA. With the approval of the authority on this order, the agency will now start the process to take possession of these properties, till the case is finally decided by a court.these assets are located in Maharashtr­a, Gujarat, Karnataka and Delhi.

NGT fines K’taka ~50 cr for polluting lakes

BENGALURU : The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday fined the state ~ 50 crore and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, the city corporatio­n for “negligence” in protecting the lakes of Bengaluru. The city’s lakes have hit headlines over the past few years. The first was Bellandur lake, which caught fire due to the presence of toxic affluence in it and then other lakes as well. The NGT has also asked the government to deposit ~500 crore in an escrow account for the execution of an action plan on the rejuvenati­on of lakes.
