Mur­der con­vict who had jumped pa­role in 2013 held

THANE: The Thane crime branch on Thurs­day ar­rested a 52-yearold man from Ut­tar Pradesh who was sen­tenced to life im­pris­on­ment for mur­der in 1994 and had been ab­scond­ing since 2013. The ac­cused, Ashok Ku­mar Upen­dra Singh, was one of the three ar­rested in the case for killing his rel­a­tive over a prop­erty dis­pute in Var­tak Na­gar in 1994. In 1997, the three were con­victed for the crime and sen­tenced to life im­pris­on­ment.

In 2013, Singh was given pa­role for three months. Dur­ing this pe­riod, he fled and had been in hid­ing since.

Re­cently, he was traced to Sul­tan­pur, Ut­tar Pradesh, based on a tip off. A team led by se­nior po­lice in­spec­tor Nitin Thakar trav­elled to the lo­ca­tion and nabbed him. “Singh has been ar­rested. Af­ter in­ves­ti­ga­tion, he will be handed over to Nashik Jail au­thor­i­ties,” said a po­lice of­fi­cial.
