After record low, temperatur­es rise marginally

NIGHT TEMPERATUR­E WAS 16 ° C, 2.3° C BELOW NORMAL, AS COMPARED TO 15° C ON THURSDAY — THE CITY’S COLDEST DECEMBER DAY IN THREE YEARS

MUMBAI: A day after the city recorded its coldest December day in three years, day and night temperatur­es increased marginally on Friday.

The Santacruz weather station recorded the night temperatur­e of 16 degrees Celsius, 2.3 degree Celsius below normal, as compared to 15 degrees Celsius on Thursday, which was the lowest minimum temperatur­e this season. The day temperatur­e in the suburbs was 32.8 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degree Celsius above normal.

Colaba recorded a night temperatur­e a degree Celsius below normal at 19.8 degrees Celsius, which was a drop from 20.8 degrees Celsius recorded on Thursday.

The day temperatur­e in south Mumbai was 33.2 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degree Celsius above normal.

In interior Maharashtr­a, Ahmednagar recorded the lowest minimum temperatur­e in the state at 7 degrees Celsius, Nashik and Jalgaon followed at 8 and 9 degrees Celsius respective­ly.

The weather bureau said temperatur­es are likely to fluctuate between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius over the weekend and next week.

“The wind pattern is switching between northerly (cold) winds to northeaste­rly (comparativ­ely warmer), which is leading to temperatur­e fluctuatio­n,” said Bishwambha­r Singh, director, Regional Meteorolog­ical Centre, India Meteorolog­ical Department (IMD).

Pollution levels were in the ‘moderate’ category as the air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 145 and is expected to be 153 on Saturday.

A clear sky has been predicted for Saturday with day and night temperatur­es expected of 32 and 17 degrees Celsius.
