MAN HELD FOR THEFT NOW IN CUSTODY FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
MUMBAI: A 24-year-old man, who was in Arthur Road jail for stealing a mobile phone in November, was on Saturday taken into custody by Vikhroli police for an earlier case of sexual assault .
The accused was booked for allegedly sexually assaulting and stalking a 20-year-old woman in Vikhroli in October.
“We took his custody from Arthur Road jail and he was produced in the court on Sunday,” said an investigating officer from Vikhroli police station.
The accused had befriended the woman on a social networking site in September last year after which they started talking. The accused used to urge the woman to meet him but she refused every time. He then started harassing her by sending her obscene messages, after which the woman blocked him. He then started stalking her on the streets, police said.
“On October 21, 2018, when the complainant was on her way to drop her uncle’s son to school, the accused stalked her and asked her to come with him to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) but she refused. After that the accused called the woman’s father and threatened and abused him,” said a police officer.
The woman, along with her father, then lodged a complaint with Vikhroli police station in the last week of October.
The police registered a case under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 354 (D) (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
