200 Sikh families adopt saplings, pledge to save Earth at Wadala event

- Yesha Kotak

MUMBAI : As part of Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti celebrations, members of the Sikh community adopted saplings. Around 200 families had registered themselves to be part of the drive that was organised by Sri Guru Singh Sabha (Dadar Gurudwara) in Wadala on Sunday.

“We registered details of all those who took the plants home. They have been instructed how to take care of the saplings. During the next event, which will be held on Baisakhi, these people will be asked to show a photo of the saplings they had taken home,” said Charanjit Kaur, a school teacher from Chembur.

Baisakhi is three months away and the organisers have planned to track the growth of the saplings distributed at Sunday’s event.

Kaur said they initiated the sapling adoption drive to save the environment. She said the community is also trying to reduce the use of paper to save trees and have switched to online forms for registration.

“There will be several initiatives throughout the year focusing on saving the earth,” she added.

Sion resident Paramjit Kaur, whose daughter adopted a sapling, said the idea is to assume that the plant is part of the family and nurture it.

“When people speak about Sikhs, we are always associated with langars. We are now hoping that with our focus on the environment we will make a difference,” said Paramjit.
