9 vehicles set ablaze in 2 separate fires

THANE: Two separate incidents of vehicles being set on fire were reported in Thane in the early hours of Monday.

In one case, eight vehicles were charred by a youth who torched his uncle’s bike because of a personal grudge. The fire from the bike spread to seven other vehicles in its proximity. Shrinagar police have arrested the accused.

“In one incident, eight vehicles parked near the bus stop at Wagle Estate were charred. Four auto-rickshaws and four bikes were gutted in the fire which broke out at around 3am on Monday,” said S Kadam, in-charge of regional disaster management cell (RDMC), Thane.

“Ajay Bumbak, 23, the accused, has been arrested. Bumbak set ablaze his uncle’s two-wheeler following a dispute between them. However, the fire spread to other parked vehicles,” said SM Patil, senior police inspector, Shrinagar police station, Thane.

In the second case, a bike was torched by an unknown person near Gaondevi ground, next to Cosmos Pride building in Naupada, Thane (West) at around 2.50am. A case has been registered at the Naupada police station against the unknown accused. “The owner of the bike which was set ablaze is not yet identified. We are attempting to find both, the owner and the person responsibl­e for this act,” said a police officer from Naupada police station.

Both incidents of fire were brought under control after locals saw the blaze and contacted the fire brigade and police.
