Temp rises to 33.7°C after last week’s chill
MUMBAI: After cool conditions for over a week, the city and suburbs both recorded a sharp rise in day and night temperatures on Tuesday.
While south Mumbai recorded day temperatures almost 4 degrees Celsius above normal at 33.2 degrees Celsius, the suburbs recorded the maximum temperature at 33.7 degrees Celsius, 3.5 degrees Celsius above normal.
The minimum temperature rose from 15.1 degrees Celsius on Monday to 19.6 degrees Celsius (almost 3 degrees Celsius above normal) on Tuesday, more than a 4 degrees Celsius rise within 24 hours.
South Mumbai recorded minimum temperature at 18.5 degrees Celsius on Monday, which increased to 21 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, 2 degrees Celsius above normal.
Moisture levels were higher than previous days as Colaba recorded 68% humidity and 44% was recorded in Santacruz.
Shifting wind pattern in the city and surrounding areas has lead to rise in temperatures, the weather bureau said.
“While north India is still reeling under cold wave conditions, the wind pattern over central parts of the country has changed to warm breeze from cool northerly winds,” said an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Pollution levels continued to be in the ‘poor’ category on Tuesday as it has been since the beginning of this year. Mumbai recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 227. BKC and Andheri were the most polluted sites with AQI at 345 and 336 respectively, both under ‘very poor’ category.
An AQI of 223 has been predicted for Wednesday.
A clear sky has been forecast for Wednesday with day and night temperatures expected at 33 and 18 degrees Celsius.
