Kashyap in main draw at Malaysia
KUALALUMPUR:PARUPALLI Kashyap entered the main draw of the Malaysia Masters 2019 after defeating Vladimir Malkov of Russia 21-12, 21-17 in straight games in the men’s singles qualification round here on Tuesday.
Kashyap, who recently married London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, will take on Rasmus Gemke from Denmark in the opening round of the BWF World Tour Super 500 event on Wednesday.
It was curtains for Subhankar Dey as he lost 18-21, 13-21 to Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand. Indian women shuttlers, Rituparna Das and Mughda Agrey, too bowed out in the qualification round. Saina Nehwal will be in action on Wednesday.
SARDAR IN HOCKEY SELECTION COMMITTEE
NEWDELHI:FORMER captain Sardar Singh has been included in a 13-member Hockey India selection committee, to be headed by B P Govinda, a member of the 1975 World Cup winning team.
Sardar, who wanted to continue playing till the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, confirmed the development. “Yes, I was offered the role and I accepted it. It is a new challenge for me and I am always eager to serve Indian hockey in any way I can,” Sardar said.
ALI NAMED WOMEN’S BOXING CHIEF COACH
NEWDELHI:MOHAMMED Ali Qamar, the man who won India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in boxing, has taken over as chief coach for the country’s women pugilists, becoming the youngest ever to get the top job.
Qamar, who turns 38 in a couple of months, was appointed to the position on Monday night, replacing the veteran Shiv Singh. Ali Qamar has been an assistant coach in the national camp for more than a year.
DIKSHA, SIFAT AMONG PRO DEBUTANTS
PUNE: Diksha Dagar and Sifat Alag are among six of the seven players who recently turned pro, to figure in first leg of the Tour at Poona Club Golf Course. Ridhima Dilawari, Anousha Tripathi, Jyotsana Singh, Dolma Rawat and Ananya Datar are other members. Ishvari Prasanna will not be playing this week.
