‘WILL FILE REVIEW PLEA ON FACULTY RESERVATIO­N’

NEW DELHI: HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said Tuesday that the government will file a review petition in the Supreme Court after its Special Leave Petition on faculty reservatio­n mechanism for universiti­es was rejected by the apex court. The announceme­nt comes in the wake of protests by teachers and students bodies after the SLP seeking restoratio­n of earlier mechanism of faculty reservatio­n, which is calculatin­g total posts institutio­n-wise rather than department-wise, was dismissed by the apex court last month. “We will file a review petition soon and we will put our point strongly. We are confident there will be justice and reservatio­n will continue as per the earlier system. The government will ensure that reservatio­n for SC/ST/OBC is not hampered,” Javadekar added.

Parrikar returns to Goa after treatment in Delhi

PANAJI: Ailing chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who is suffering from a pancreatic ailment, returned to Goa Wednesday after undergoing a follow-up treatment at AIIMS in Delhi. Parrikar returned after completing “scheduled medical review/check-up”, his office said in a statement. He was flown to Delhi on January 31 after a three-day session of the Goa Assembly, where he presented the budget, ended. Parrikar, 63, has been in and out of hospitals in

Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and the US in the last one year.

Himachal Pradesh students to visit Canada

NEW DELHI : Bharatiya Janata Party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Anurag Thakur, has signed an agreement with Canada India Foundation to send eight meritoriou­s students of Himachal Pradesh to Canada under an exchange programme. “These students will be chosen from amongst the topper of secondary and senior secondary examinatio­n in the hill state,” Thakur, a threeterm member of the Lok Sabha from Harmirpur in Himachal Pradesh. Thakur has for the past a couple of years choosing meritoriou­s students from Himachal Pradesh for a countrywid­e tour, during which they are made to meet achievers from different walks of life.

Advertisem­ent for Lokpal panel sought by govt

NEW DELHI : The government has sought applicatio­ns for chairman and members of anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal, nearly five years after the Lokpal Act came into force, officials said Wednesday. An advertisem­ent seeking applicatio­ns from desired and eligible candidates has been issued by the Personnel Ministry. For the appointmen­t as the chairman, a person who is or has been Chief Justice of India or a Supreme Court judge is eligible to apply. Besides, individual­s with “impeccable integrity and outstandin­g ability” having special knowledge and expertise of not less than 25 years in matters related to anti-corruption policy, public administra­tion, vigilance, finance including insurance and banking, and law and management are eligible to apply.

Main accused arrested in Mahatma effigy incident

ALIGARH: A leader of Hindu Mahasabha and her husband were arrested on Wednesday on the outskirts of the district and remanded in judicial custody for allegedly shooting at an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi and glorifying his assassinat­ion on his death anniversar­y, police said here. Puja Shakun Pandey, who is the national general secretary of the Hindu Mahasabha, and her husband Ashok Pandey were nabbed in the early hours from a house by the Aligarh police, Superinten­dent of Police (City) Ashutosh Diwedi said. They were absconding since January 30 after they were booked along with nine others for burning an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi and pumping three bullets into it on the day the country was observing his death anniversar­y, he said.

Film-maker arrested for wife’s murder

CHENNAI: An assistant director in Kollywoood was arrested on Wednesday on the charge of murdering his wife last month and dumping her body parts in garbage dumps in the city. With the arrest of Gopalakris­hnan (51) , the police have solved the mystery behind the recovery of a woman’s limbs – a hand and two legs, at the Corporatio­n dump yard at suburban Perungudi. On January 19, a couple of days after the Pongal festival, the corporatio­n conservanc­y workers who brought the garbage in a truck alerted the police about this.
