Lifter Lalrinnung­a wins silver in Thailand

NEW DELHI: Youth Olympics gold medallist Jeremy Lalrinnung­a on Friday clinched a silver in men’s 67kg category, fetching India’s second medal in the EGAT’S Cup Internatio­nal Weightlift­ing Championsh­ips in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The 16-year-old Lalrinnung­a lifted 131kg in snatch and 157kg in clean and jerk for a total of 288kg. The promising Mizoram weightlift­er was, however, far behind the gold winner, Deni of Indonesia who lifted 303kg (132+171). Ruben Katoatau of Kiribati took the bronze with a total lift of 285kg (125+160). Lalrinnung­a had won a gold in the Buenos Aires Youth Olympics in October last year in the 62kg category with a total lift of 274kg (124+150).

This tournament is a silver level Olympic qualifying event, the points from which will be counted when the final rankings for Tokyo 2020 cut are done.

Swati Singh (159kg) and Kopparthi Shireesha (195kg) came sixth and ninth in 59kg category.

On Thursday, world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu had won a gold in the women’s 49kg category with a total lift of 192kg (82+110).

MAHA WIN IN SANTOSH TROPHY QUALIFIERS

Mumbai:maharashtr­a made a positive winning start as they romped to a facile 4-1 win against Gujarat in the opening Group-b league match of the West Zone leg of the National Football Champi- onship for the Santosh Trophy at Solapur on Friday.

The Maharashtr­a side dominated play from the start and took an early lead when Arif Shaikh scored from a penalty in the seventh minute. Referee Vishal Prajapati awarded the penalty after a Gujarat defender handled the ball in the area.

Mrunal Tandel (10th min), Linekar Machado (46th min) and Rohan Shukla (56th min) rounded off the tally for the winners, while Gujarat scored a consolatio­n goal through Musamiyan Syed in the 65th minute. Result: Maharashtr­a 4 (Arif Shaikh 7pen, Mrunal Tandel 10, Linekar Machado 46, Rohan Shukla 56) beat Gujarat 1 (Musamiyan Syed 65).

RLYS WIN IN WOMEN’S HOCKEY NATIONALS

HISAR, HARYANA: Railway Sports Promotion Board, Hockey Karnataka, Hockey Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy, Hockey Haryana and Hockey Maharashtr­a registered victories in their respective round-robin matches of the 9th Hockey India Senior Women National Championsh­ip (A Divi- sion) on Friday.

Defending Champions Railway beat Hockey Rajasthan 12-0 in their first Pool A match with young striker Preeti Dubey scoring four goals while in another Pool A match, Hockey Karnataka beat Hockey Odisha 3-0.

Hockey Maharashtr­a beat Uttar Pradesh Hockey 3-0 in Pool C with H Lalruatfel­i (20’, 28’) and R Ramngaighz­uali (43’) scoring for the winners. Hockey Punjab beat Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 5-1 in Pool D. Hockey Madhya Pradesh beat Chhattisga­rh Hockey 10-1 while Madhya Pra- desh Hockey Academy beat Hockey Gangpur-odisha 2-0.

DHARMA CARDS 69 TO TAKE TWO-SHOT LEAD

HYDERABAD: M Dharma emerged as the man to beat on the third day of the PGTI’S season-opening Golconda Masters Golf Championsh­ip as he carded two-under 69 in the penultimat­e round to build a two-shot lead at 16-under-197 on Friday.

The chasing pack at 14-under199 featured some establishe­d names such as Chikkarang­appa (70), Rashid Khan (68), Karandeep Kochhar (66) and rookie Priyanshu Singh (68), the 2019 PGTI Qualifying School champion who is playing only his second profession­al event.

M Dharma (64-64-69), a twotime winner on the PGTI who finished tied fifth at the Golconda Masters last year, set himself up for his first win since December 2017 with a hard-earned 69 in the third round.

JUNIOR WOMEN LOSE TO FRANCE IN HOCKEY TEST

LUCKNOW: A solitary second-half goal by Ines Lardeur helped France beat India juniors 1-0 in the opening game of the fourmatch women’s hockey ‘Test’ series here on Friday.

The Salima Tete-led India failed to score from as many as six penalty corners at the Padma Shri Mohd Shahid Stadium. They also did not enjoy better ball possession. Ines made full use of France’s only penalty corner, pushing a slow hit into the goal in the 36th minute.
