2 jackals spotted, one rescued at Bhayander
MUMBAI: A jackal, which entered a residential area near Nehru Nagar, Bhayander (West), on Saturday, was rescued by an animal welfare group.
Residents who spotted the jackal outside a house, first mistook it for a dog. “We informed the fire and forest departments. We haven’t spotted a jackal here in over 30 years,” said Prabhakar Mangela, a resident. An animal welfare group rushed the animal to the Thane forest office. Forest officials said the jackal was dehydrated and injured. “We will be rehabilitating the animal for the next two days before releasing it,” said Jitendra Ramgaokar, deputy conservator of forest, Thane.
In Charkop, environmentalist Mili Shetty and other birders spotted another jackal near the mangrove forests. Both the jackals seem to have strayed from the mangroves. Jackals are protected under schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
