FIRE BREAKS OUT IN COMPOUND OF MINISTER’S HOME, NO ONE INJURED

MUMBAI: A minor fire broke out in state food and civil supplies minister Girish Bapat’s residence’s compound in Malabar Hill on Monday at 9am. The fire was doused within 18 minutes and no injuries were reported. A spokespers­on for the minister said, “The fire was caused by a short circuit in the staff quarters.” “The fire broke out in the Dyaneshwar­i Bungalow premises in Malabar Hill. It was a Level 0 [very small] fire and did not cause much damage,” said an officer from BMC’S disaster management cell.

You may soon have to link your train pass to Aadhaar

MUMBAI: Passengers travelling on the suburban railway network may soon have to link their train passes with their Aadhaar card. The plan, which was proposed during a meeting of the Zonal Railway User’s Consultati­ve Committee, will be sent to the railway board for approval. The proposal was made as it would help commuters in case they lose their passes. Subhash Gupta, president, Rail Yatra Parishad, confirmed the developmen­t.

Rajdhani Express to get two new coaches on Feb 13, 16

MUMBAI: The Central Railway has announced that it will attach two additional AC-3 type coaches to the Rajdhani Express that operates between CSMT and Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi on February 13 and 16. The decision was taken to clear the extra rush of passengers after Western Railway services were hit owing to the ongoing Gujjar agitation.

22-year-old priest steals diamond from idol, held

MUMBAI : A 22-year-old priest was arrested for stealing a diamond, worth ₹1.25 lakh, that was embedded in an idol from a trader’s residence in Kandivli. The accused, Harshal Arun Kumar Shah, used to visit the complainan­t’s home frequently to conduct pujas. The diamond has been recovered, said senior police inspector Nitin Pondkule.

48-year-old dupes man of ₹7L, held after two years

MUMBAI: A 48-year-old history sheeter, who had been evading arrest for two years, was recently arrested for cheating a man of ₹7.15lakh by promising him a 6-acre plot in Baramati, Pune at cheap rates under government quota. The accused, Santosh Manjare, allegedly bragged about his close relationsh­ip with a former revenue minister. His accomplice, Vanmala Kharat, had been arrested in May 2017.

Woman jumps off bridge, saved by cop, fisherman

NAVI MUMBAI: Traffic personnel and a fisherman saved the life of a woman who jumped off Vashi bridge on Monday afternoon. The unconsciou­s woman was taken to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporatio­n (NMMC) hospital at Vashi. Sunil Lokkhande, deputy commission­er of police (traffic), said, “The woman is stable. Around 2.30pm, we [the traffic control room] got a call of the incident. Three traffic personnel, including a woman traffic cop, rushed to the spot.” The traffic police called the local fisherman Sachin Bhoir to rescue the woman. She was rushed to NMMC hospital in an autoricksh­aw,” said, Lokhande.

Gas leak at Taloja spreads panic, no injuries reported

NAVI MUMBAI: A gas leak at a fish processing unit at plot 5 in Taloja on Monday evening spread panic in the area. Ajay Kumar Langde, senior police inspector, said, “Ammonia leaked from a gasket of the compressin­g unit. The leakage was not major. No one was injured.” Five women employees, who complained about dizziness, headache and vomiting were taken to hospital and were discharged after treatment. “The factory inspector has been called and after a detailed report is submitted, we will register a case on Tuesday,” he said.
